Math
Grade 6 math and Pre-Algebra students have also begun their work on the first chapters of their texts. You will notice a few changes in math for your sixth grader this year. One of my favorite things about teaching at Willowwind is that I am able to incorporate student voice and choice into our classroom. After lengthy discussion, each math group has opted to approach math a bit differently this school year. While all agree that they like the videos and the flipped instruction, they also felt that they were missing having a more traditional approach to math learning.
With those feelings and thoughts on the table, we decided to have more varied instruction this year. I will teach many concepts in the classroom, complete individual and group review in the classroom, and assign both videos and home practice to enforce concepts. The videos are always available for review, to help if a student is confused, to help if a parent is confused :), and to watch if a day of school is missed so that students don't fall behind. I was so proud of the thoughtful and considerate approach all took to discussing this issue, and I think the solution we've developed will be very successful!
A Note on Homework
If your child has worked diligently for 45 minutes and has not completed the work, please "red line" his or her paper (mark where he or she left off and initial) or leave a note for me on the weekly homework tracking sheet, which is in the front of the white homework binder. This communication helps me to understand the correct workload for our group this year. Students who attend ASP have designated and supported homework time and may be able to finish assigned work before coming home. Should you have any questions about homework, don't hesitate to be in touch.
Have a wonderful week! Be in touch with your thoughts as our community continues to establish routines and build relationships.
